CleanTech Lithium PLC (AIM:CTL, OTCQX:CTLHF) has named Ignacio Mehech, the former Chile country head of American specialty chemicals gaint Albemarle, as its new chief executive and a member of the board.
The AIM-listed group is developing sustainable lithium projects in Chile and is looking to draw on Mehech’s experience as it moves into a more operational phase.
He spent seven years at Albemarle, the world’s largest producer of battery-grade lithium, with the last three as country manager in Chile, a region that accounts for as much as 40% of the company’s output.
In that role, he managed a workforce of more than 1,000 people and led discussions with government officials, indigenous communities, and investors.
CleanTech said his appointment reflects the company’s focus on advancing its Chilean assets and strengthening its presence on the ground.
A Chilean national, Mehech brings both legal and industry credentials, having also worked with Freeport McMoRan on the El Abra copper project, a joint venture with state-owned miner Codelco.
He holds a law degree from the Universidad de Chile and a master’s in energy and resources law from the University of Melbourne.
The new CEO told investors:Â "I've been following CleanTech Lithium's progress in Chile for the past couple of years and have been impressed at the progress that has been achieved, with the company being one of the most active in Chile in seeking to develop a more sustainable means of producing lithium from Chile's abundant brine resources."
